OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2: The fastest desktop SSD you can buy?

For a long time the bus interfaces [IDE/ATA, SATA, SATA300, etc.] were fast enough to deal with any disk that was connected to them. With the rise of SSD that luxury is fading away quickly. The new generation SSD’s have already about reached the limit of the SATA 600 and history tells us that the hunger for more speed will go on everlastingly. With SATA 1200 not even on the roadmap yet there is a solution at hand today. The faster interface PCI-e is available today. However traditionally used for graphics cards but nevertheless very suitable for SSD.

Resolving the imperfections of the previous RevoDrive series, OCZ has now tackled them all very nicely in the new Revodrive 3 series. The old PCI-X bridge chip has disappeared and made room for a new generation PCI-e chip combined with their new Superscale Controller. In addition the conventional RAID-0 array combining the four SandForce controllers has been replaced by OCZ’s new technology called Virtualized Controller Architecture 2.0 [VCA 2.0]. And thanks to that VCA technology the RevoDrives now also support TRIM, something that is not possible with the original RevoDrive or any RAIDed configuration. And is it fast? Oh yes, it is…. very fast. The ATTO benchmark gave us such scores that ‘impressive’ would be an understatement. Reads more than 1500 MB/s, Writes over 1300 MB/s and IOPS went through the roof, set at 200,000.

Concluding all benchmarks that we ran, we found that this is an SSD that wants to be stressed, it needs severe loads to show what it can do. It means that this is not an SSD for internet use. That would leave you with an overkill of performance and never really use the full strength of its potential. Only the user that really uses those demanding applications, also suited for workstations, then it really starts to pull away from other SATA III SSD’s.
