Vertex 3 wins Excellent Hardware Award and RevoDrive 3 X2 named "The culmination of the current SSD market". (Hardwareluxx)l
Review:
With SSD-technology gradually maturing over time and the overall costs of SSDs going down we made an overview to give you an insight in the trends of todays market.
In order to do so we are looking at all models that can be used in desktops and look at four different characteristics of SSDs; type of controller, type of flash, the effect of the capacity, and a performance test between the different types of Raid-solutions available.
The main controllers that are currently used are the SandForce and Marvell controllers. In order to test the difference between the two we used OCZs Agility 3, Vertex 3, and Vertex 3 MAX IOPS to represent the SandForce based SSDs. When put next the Marvell based SSDs from Intel en Plextor we see a clear advantage for the SandForce controller.
In an effort to understand what kind of flash is best we have used the Agility 3, Vertex 3, and Vertex 3 MAX IOPS. Accordingly these contain 25nm asynchronous flash, 25nm synchronous flash, and 32nm toggle flash.
What is most surprising in our tests is the way that these models even though differently build still perform similar to each other with the performance of the Vertex 3 and Vertex 3 MAX IOPS in favour of the Agility 3. Throughout our tests these SSDs always came out on top and sometimes not even in the same order. Of these three 2.5 models the Vertex 3 came out on top with the best overall performance.
For the capacity test we found that there is a clear difference between the different capacities. As the capacity increases from 120 GB to 240 GB the performance also increases.
Finally we come to our last performance test that involves RAID-solutions. For this performance test we have received OCZs RevoDrive 3 X2. This product is a PCIe SSD that combines four controllers into one using OCZs own VCA 2.0 technology. Its competition is a RAID-0 solution that we have made by combining one of the best RAID-controllers money can buy with four ADATA S511 SSDs.
Next to the RevoDrive 3 X2 being more affordable then building our RAID-solution it is also worth mentioning that over time TRIM will be available for this product which will avoid performance degradation over time.
When you look at our test results you will see that the RevoDrive 3 X2 soared through the charts breaking records along the way. We have to conclude for this test that it is the true culmination of the current SSD market.
In our final conclusion we do have to pick a favourite SSD and for the enthusiast we once again award the Vertex 3 with our Excellent Hardware award due to its excellent performance and reasonable price.
