Like its predecessor, the Vertex 2, OCZ uses a SandForce controller for its Vertex 3. And like its predecessor it support the latest technology which means that this time round it supports SATA 3 which offers a bandwidth of up to 6 Gb/s . This also explains the huge difference in speed between the Vertex 2 and 3. The Vertex 3 as capable of reaching speeds of up to 550 MB/s which is far beyond the limit of SATA 2, and with regards to the Vertex 2 the speed has almost doubled.

Something less likely to be spotted with the naked eye is the change from 34nm to 25nm flash chips. This has become the new standard in the industry and also has the advantage of significantly lowering production costs.

But what is the improvement in performance? As the most important benchmark we used PC Mark Vantage to answer this question. In this daily use benchmark we measured an improvement of up to 20% over the previous generation. The Vertex 3 scored 52538 point compared to the 43914 points of the Vertex 2. Using CrystalDiskMark we also saw this improvement with the Vertex 3 reaching a maximum read speed of 485 MB/s. We do have to mention that SSD’s perform better on an Intel platform but that an AMD platform like ours will still give you impressive results.

If you have a system that supports SATA 3 than the Vertex 3 will be worth every penny.
